A guide to getting the most out of our star maps
A Posterhaste star map illustrates the position of the stars in the sky on a particular date, time and location that is important to you. The fully personalised nature of these products make them perfect gifts to celebrate special occasions - birthdays, christenings, birth announcements - you name it, a star map is a great way to commemorate it.
If you’ve decided a star map is the ideal way to capture an important moment, there are a few handy tips to bear in mind if you want to get the most of this design. So, in this guide we have outlined our top pointers - we’ve also shared a little about how it all works to give you an insight into how we create your bespoke print.
What information do you need from me?
The most important information required is the location you want the map to illustrate, plus the particular date and time. Yes, it’s that precise - just search for your location or select it on our map, and then set the calendar and time. Based on this information we are able to show you exactly how the stars and the constellations in the sky appeared, or how they will look at a certain date in the future.
Can I include text?
Yes! This is your chance to give context to your piece of lovingly created wall art. It’s up to you what information to include. You could include details about the location, or why the date is an important one. You can get as creative as you like by adding a quote, song lyric or excerpt of a poem.
Do I have to include text?
No! Many customers prefer to let the star map speak for itself, by just featuring the map image without text.
So you don’t automatically include the date, location and time?
We don’t include any default information on the sky maps such as a time and date signature - this is to offer customers a fully personalised design. You can opt to include this information if you like, though, by adding it to the caption or title field.
What other options can I include?
Your map will include the layout of the stars, but you can add features such as the constellations, planets and faint stars to your design. Update the preview each time you add a new feature and see which configuration you like the best.
Why am I shown a proof of my design?
We offer every customer an instant preview of their design so they can check they are happy with the design they have created. It’s really important to use this opportunity to check you are definitely happy with everything, as we print exactly what is shown to you on this preview. So do triple check all the dates are correct, the spelling is as you wish and you’ve not left anything out. It only takes a couple of minutes but saves red faces further down the line!
How do you do it?
We collate our data from the HYG database - this is the largest dataset of star positions currently available, which combines a number of star catalogues together. The position of the stars relative to a location and specific time/date are calculated using algorithms which allow us to display the stars for dates both in the past, and in the future.
Tell me more about how my stars are laid out...
The location that you set using a postcode, or address, is the location at which you are looking up at the sky. The outside of the circle is the sky as it meets the horizon, due to the curvature of the Earth - the middle of the circle is directly above you at your chosen location.
