How to design the perfect Family Portrait

How to design the perfect Family Portrait

It can be quite hard to surprise a loved one with a portrait of the whole family together due to the fact, well, it does really require them to be in it! Once you arrive at the photographer’s studio all dressed up and ready to pose it really does tend to give the game away.

This is why our personalised Family Portrait design can be the ideal solution - you get to create a lighthearted stick figure representation of each family member and present the finished product as a complete surprise to the lucky recipient.

This design is versatile - as well as celebrating family life, you could highlight a particular friendship group, a team within your workplace, or even put your treasured pets in the limelight. The portraits are a great way to celebrate a wedding by featuring the smiling newlyweds, or to mark an expanding family by adding in a cute baby character.

Before you get stuck into designing, we’ve collated a few handy tips for getting the most out of this design. Have a read and then get creative with our large range of fully personalised family characters.

In a nutshell: The design is intended as a cartoon representation of each person so the characters appear as stick figure drawings.

You can personalise each family member by adding their name, selecting the character type (man/older woman/baby and so on), clothing colour, expressions, hair and accessories. Pets are available too, and in many cases these can also be customised by selecting a colour. Once you’ve finished adding family members hit 'update preview' and voilà - your family portrait is ready. Not quite finished? Just keep editing and updating the preview until you are happy.

Short and punchy: You can assign each character a name but please note, the design allows for one line of text only. So, this is not necessarily the space for all their middle names, titles, aliases and impressive qualifications as the text will run into the next name if it is too long. It is best to keep names short and sweet.

Choose a background: There are a range of different colourful background colours to choose from or you can opt to keep the design on a white background. Please note, the colour of the background is not intended to denote skin colour - our figures are transparent!

Don’t forget anybody: We know they are your nearest and dearest, but sometimes it is possible to omit somebody - perhaps you had not realised your old school friend was coming to this particular gathering, or cousin Adam was bringing his new girlfriend for Christmas dinner. As designs are printed almost immediately after an order is placed, it is worth double checking you’ve remembered everybody before hitting that confirm button.

Title: We do give a couple of examples for inspiration for titles but we leave it up to you whether to add one to your design. You are free to be as creative as you like with this field, or you can opt just to leave it blank.

Get everyone together: Really big extended family? Massive pet lovers? No problem. You can add a lot of people and animals to our family portraits, but please just bear in mind that the characters will get smaller as more are added.
